Generative AI applications such as ChatGPT, DeepL Write, and Microsoft Copilot can be helpful tools in everyday student life – provided that you use them consciously and correctly.
But what is and is not allowed? What do you have to keep in mind? Here, we have compiled the most important points of the St. Pölten UAS’ official guidelines in a brief overview.
1. Data protection first
No matter how convenient: Personal or confidential data (e.g., from interviews or case studies) must never be entered into AI systems without the affected persons’ written consent. The reason: Many of these systems do not sufficiently disclose what they do with this data – which is not in line with the GDPR.
➡️ If you are unsure whether an AI tool is compliant with data protection laws, it is better not to use it.
2. Transparency is a must
AI tools are considered auxiliary means – just like literature or software. Therefore, you need to clearly indicate which content you have created with the help of ChatGPT & Co.
Be careful when it comes to exams and final theses:
Unauthorised use constitutes a case of fraud.
In final theses, the use of AI without prior approval and marking it as such can be considered a false pretence of scientific performance.
➡️ Make sure that you have transparently documented its use. If you are uncertain, consult your lecturers!
3. Stay critical
AI is not an expert. It can be mistaken, make up new content (“hallucinate”), or cite inaccurate sources. ➡️ Always check for yourself, compare, and cite correctly.
4. Consider the consequences
Many tools will ask that you create an account and enter personal data.
AI consumes a lot of energy.
The content it delivers may reinforce societal bias and stereotypes.
➡️ Use AI only in a conscious and reflected manner – not thoughtlessly.
5. You remain the expert
AI can offer ideas and aid with formulations – but it cannot replace your competence. ➡️ Only if you have sound knowledge, you can correctly assess and meaningfully use AI results.
