SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities
We create mobility as part of a sustainable future through research, innovation, and participation.
Sustainable cities are more than energy-efficient buildings and green spaces. They have to be inclusive, safe, resilient, and future-proof. Mobility plays a central role in this context: It has an impact on quality of life, climate, environment, and social participation. We need innovative concepts and holistic approaches to design the transition to climate-friendly, efficient, and inclusive mobility systems.
Four Projects – One Common Goal: Sustainable Mobility for All
The Department of Rail Technology and Mobility of USTP and its associated research institute – the Carl Ritter von Ghega Institute for Integrated Mobility Research – are developing solutions that go far beyond technical innovation. Their focus is on an integrative approach that combines ecological, economic, and social dimensions – very much in keeping with the principles of sustainable development.
- Regional mobility lab in Amstetten-Waidhofen a/d Ybbs
How can the mobility transition be a success in rural areas? The mobility lab ‘AmWy.mobility‘ develops concepts for the mobility of persons and goods, initiates participatory processes, and creates a mobility database. The objective is to point out alternatives to motorised individual transport and to promote sustainable solutions for the region – both for events and companies. - Pölten 2030 – KlimaNEUTRAL + KlimaFIT
The vision: St. Pölten as a climate-neutral model town. Together with the town administration, the business sector, and civil society, a roadmap was created that points the way to a climate-neutral future. Participation and innovation are central levers for developing a city worth living in. - LOGI-TOOLKIT
Urban freight transport tends to have a high detrimental impact on both the environment and quality of life. LOGI-TOOLKIT provides the basis for planning the integration of logistics in city districts – evidence-based, efficient, and early on. The web-based toolkit – which was tested with Vienna, St. Pölten, and Klagenfurt – supports cities in integrating sustainable solutions into urban district planning at an early stage.
- comfort:zone
Mobility has to be inclusive. The project develops different tools to give a voice to groups generally underrepresented in traffic planning. Through citizen science and participatory methods, weak spots in the public sphere are identified and removed – for mobility that benefits all.
Together for Liveable Cities and Communities
All projects show: Sustainable mobility is more than technology – it is a process of social transformation. Through research, participation, and digital innovations, USTP creates room for change and contributes to turning SDG 11 into a reality.
About the SDG Topic Series
Within the framework of our SDG topic series, we dedicate ourselves to one of the 17 goals for sustainable development every week. The selected contributions serve as examples to illustrate how USTP – University of Applied Sciences St. Pölten contributes to a sustainable future. In doing so, we highlight diverse issues – from poverty in old age and ‘AI for Green’ to strategic partnerships and networks.
