SDG 13 Climate Action

In its SDG 13 “Climate Action”, the United Nations’ Agenda 2030 demands concrete steps towards mitigating the consequences of climate change.

Mobility as Key to Climate Protection

Climate change is one of the biggest challenges of our times. Extreme weather events, rising temperatures, and dwindling resources show: We must do something – and we must do it now.

In its SDG 13 “Climate Action”, the United Nations’ Agenda 2030 demands concrete steps towards limiting global warming and mitigating the consequences of climate change.

The transport sector plays a central role in this context as it is among the biggest producers of greenhouse gas emissions – and harbours enormous potentials for their reduction at the same time. In order to attain our climate targets, we have to rethink mobility: It needs to be climate-friendly, efficient, and inclusive. Research and innovation are essential means to this end.

Selected Projects Illustrate the Diversity of Our Approaches

At USTP – University of Applied Sciences St. Pölten, we pursue an integrative approach that combines ecological, economic, and social dimensions. Our projects show how diverse paths towards climate protection can be:

  • Facilitate access and raise awareness

Climate-friendly mobility needs to be easy and attractive – and it starts in everyday life. The project titled ‘Vernetzter Ticketbetrieb’ explores technical solutions for a unified booking system across all railway operators in order to make international rail travel as uncomplicated as possible. At the same time, initiatives such as CLEA and MIKiYo rely on education and gamified approaches to promote a new mobility awareness – from schools to rural areas – and create the necessary conditions for a real change of habits.

  • Shift and optimise processes

Climate protection affects not only passenger transport but logistics as well. The project ‘BündelHeinz’ develops innovative solutions for the independent pooling and greening of order and delivery processes. The objective is to reduce the number of induced trips and promote low-emission transport chains – an important step towards the sustainable mobility of goods.

  • Develop competencies for the mobility transition

The transformation of the transport sector requires professionals with new qualifications. The project ‘STAFFER’ develops needs-oriented curricula and innovative educational paths for the entire railway sector – a decisive contribution to strengthening climate-friendly mobility.

A Few Examples of Many

These are only a few examples of our research projects. With research, innovation, and participation, USTP creates room for change and helps to make SDG 13 a reality – in combination with numerous other projects and initiatives.

About the SDG Topic Series

Within the framework of our SDG topic series, we dedicate ourselves to one of the 17 goals for sustainable development every week. The selected contributions serve as examples to illustrate how USTP – University of Applied Sciences St. Pölten contributes to a sustainable future. In doing so, we highlight diverse issues – from poverty in old age and ‘AI for Green’ to strategic partnerships and networks.
